INTRODUCING THE TALES-FOR-THOUGHTS:

Throughout the conference, WAAD will feature this innovative series that aims at showing the interlocking discourses of African diasporic cinema, especially as they offer multiple points of entry for engaging gender relations in the era of globalization. Given the capacity of film to traverse imaginative realms, transform realities and, on occasions, subvert seemingly secure patriarchal relations and hierarchical structures, the series’ films are distinctive in their dynamic relationships with certain discourses that crisscross, for instance, culture, identity, history, and ‘belonging’. These films, given the inherently complex constituencies of the African diaspora as well as incessant historical transformations, are as much about ‘origins’ as they are about forms of agency and self-definition, with dialogues across divides as their hallmark. To the extent that the films, generally, contest the status quo, foreground contradictions and paradoxes, they constitute interventions in intricate and evolving webs of social relations.
